Congratulations KC Steel Raiders Winners!
Mill Creek Youth Affiliate performs at national championship
KC Steel Raiders recently competed in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program National Championship tournament held at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, July 9 through 20.
A group of 13 kids competed with 39 different guns in six different disciplines. A squad of four, featuring Brody Batenhorst, Riley Gibson, Benico Talbot, and Charlie Pickman, won second place with iron rifles in the open division! In addition, Brody Batenhorse received first place in mens intermediate/entry level 1911 division and third place in mens intermediate/entry level rimfire pistol division.
Scholastic Action Shooting Program is a nationally run shooting sports program for children from elementary through high school. Mill Creek Rifle Club has hosted practices for the KC Steel Raiders SASP team for all six years the team has been in existence. The season starts with each school year and ends with the national competition in July. The kids practice each Sunday on the LE ranges, shooting drills and stages on steel plates, similar to the courses of fire conducted by the U.S. Practical Shooting Association's Steel Challenge Shooting Association.
According to Mill Creek Rifle Club Law Enforcement Liaison Jennifer Gibson, who coaches the KC Steel Raiders, participating in this youth shooting program brings benefits that go far beyond learning to shoot. "I recently asked two of our varsity athletes about what being on the team meant to them and what lessons they have learned," Ms. Gibson says. "Besides displaying excellent gun safety, learning to care, clean and fix their firearms, and improving their speed shooting, I was told things like, 'You’re always improving, even when you don’t feel like anything is changing,' and 'Don’t be afraid to fail; it will help challenge you and help you fix what needs to be adjusted.' They told me, 'The mental aspect of sports are just as influential in performance as the physical side.' It has been amazing watching all the team members of KC Steel Raiders as they grow as shooters, individuals, and friends."
Please congratulate any of the KC Steel Raiders shooters and their coaches if you see them practicing or participating in events at the range.
