Update on New Membership Renewal System

Assessment report from the secretary

Now that the 2025 membership renewal season has closed, Mill Creek Rifle Club Secretary Lisa Castellon-Smith reports the following assessment of the revised online renewal system.

  • This year's attrition rate, that is, the number of previous members who did not submit a renewal application, totalled 83. That equals just over 4 percent of the membership. According to Membership Director Curt Cotton, that attrition rate is typical for any given membership year.
  • Of the members who renewed in 2025, 84 percent used the new online renewal system; 16 percent mailed or personally delivered their renewals to the secretary.
  • Of the members who renewed using the online renewal, all but 27 paid by credit card. It was obvious by its adoption that payment by credit card was a widespread demand among membership, as was evidenced by the popularity of the option when the board of directors surveyed membership. "It's 2022," said one respondent at the time, "and Mill Creek is the only check I write."
  • The additional cost to the club to offer and process payment by credit card was calculated to be approximately $6,900, not including the cost of the secretary's or volunteers' time. The board voted in late 2024 to absorb the cost of converting to payment by credit card, rather than charge members the fee directly.
  • All told, 58 members renewed after the May 31 deadline but before June 30, making them eligible for the $100 late renewal penalty. However, the board of directors voted earlier in the year to waive the late fee through June 15, to accommodate members who may have been unaccustomed to the new online system. Of the 58 late renewals, 48 came in before the June 15 extended deadline and did not pay the late fee.
  • Of the membership renewals that were delayed due to processing issues, the majority were related to failure to provide sufficient proof of membership in the National Rifle Association. Mill Creek is a 100 percent membership NRA club and proof of current membership is a requirement for membership renewal.
