Membership Renewals
Mill Creek Rifle Club membership renewals are accepted between January and the following May 31 of each year. If you are a current Mill Creek member, you must renew your membership each year, before the May 31 deadline. However, please do not use a prior year's membership renewal form to renew your membership. Your membership renewal form is a contract between you and Mill Creek Rifle Club, in which you agree under penalty of membership revocation to abide by the current set of range rules. Therefore, each year's renewal application is different, as rules change from year to year. If you use a previous year's membership renewal form, your renewal application will be rejected.
The membership renewal form for 2025-2026, including all final range rule changes, will be posted on this page in January 2026. You may access the form at the time for your renewal at any time after that.
Please remember, do not wait to get a bill for your annual renewal, because we do not send them. Mill Creek Rifle Club does not mail to members a Renewal Notice, a Renewal Invoice, a Renewal Bill, or any similar Renewal Application. It is the responsibility of each member to visit this page, download the appropriate annual form, print the form, follow the simple instructions, and send in your completed renewal form, proof of current NRA Membership, and your check.

Range Safety "Best Practices"
When you head out to the ranges at Mill Creek Rifle Club this season, whether it's to sight-in for whitetail, or just to put some holes in paper, please keep safety as your #1 priority. Here are some reminders for the safe handling of firearms at Mill Creek Rifle Club:
Hydration

Stay hydrated, and shoot your best!
Spring has finally sprung, and before you know it, summer with all of its heat and humidity will be upon us. You need to be prepared when you come to the range. In addition to sunscreen and insect repellent, don’t forget that it is critical to maintain hydration. This fact is particularly true for those of you participating in matches at MCRC. It is very easy to get behind the hydration curve when you are concentrating on shooting. MCRC provides cold fresh water in the clubhouse and is encouraging all match directors to supply water and/or Gatorade to their competitors during the matches and, if needed, allow for frequent heat breaks. We urge everyone to be responsible for his or her own hydration.

Technology and Gun Control
Just about everybody has heard of Wayne LaPierre . But who has ever heard of Cody Wilson? While Wayne LaPierre is fighting for our gun right on the federal, state and local levels via the National Rifle Association, Cody Wilson is making gun control obsolete! How is this possible? He uses 3-D printer technology to lower the barrier to gun access and acquisition.
3-D printers are devices which can “print” objects. A conventional printer uses ink and paper to print documents. A 3D printer usually uses plastics to create objects. In both cases the printer needs files to print. Cody has either created or obtained 3-D print files of guns. His main focus is the AR platform. On his website: http://defdist.org/ users can download files. These files are uploaded to a 3D printer (entry level printers cost around $1,000) and in a matter of hours the receiver, magazine or pistol grip is made!
Not everything can be made on a 3-D printer, currently 3-D printers use plastic which is fairly weak compared to aluminum or steel, however 3-D printing technology will get better and cheaper! In 10 to 20 years in to the future it might be possible to print complete metal assemblies.
3-D printing has altered the gun control debate because now if anybody has a 3-D printer they can print as many 30 round magazines in the privacy of their home as they want! The same goes for firearm receivers. Furthermore, as the printing technology improves more items will feasible to print faster and cheaper.

Range Rental/Usage/Reservation
Groups may reserve one or more shooting ranges at Mill Creek provided that the follow conditions are satisfied:
- The group provides MCRC a copy of the insurance policy covering the shooting event(s)
- Competitors/group members must sign an MCRC provided disclaimer
- The event must benefit and promote the shooting sports
- The shooting event must benefit Mill Creek Rifle Club and its members
- Organizers need to disclose in detail desired activities, frequency and duration.
- Single-shooter or small groups do not have to formally reserve range space; however, any paid training or other remunerated activity may only be conducted with permission of the club.
Any request for range reservation or usage must start by completing this form and returning it to the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with a current certificate of insurance.
Based on the discretion of the Mill Creek board of directors, event organizers may be required to meet with the MCRC board to educate the board regarding the shooting event and answer questions and concerns regarding the event. The MCRC calendar fills up quickly, therefore groups need to submit their request as early as possible. Listed below are some groups which use MCRC for scheduled events:
Police/Law Enforcement
A large number of Police Departments in the Kansas City Metro use MCRC for marksmanship training. Police departments which use MCRC sign annual contracts. Johnson County Sheriff's Office is in charge of scheduling.
Shooting Sports
This year MCRC will host competitions in the following shooing disciplines: Benchrest, IPSC, Highpower, Swiss Rifle/Pistol, Bowling Pin Shooting and Blackpowder Rifle Shooting. MCRC does not charge a flat fee to hold a competition. Rather MCRC charges $5 per competitor.
Shooting Industry
Companies in the shooting sports industry sporadically use MCRC ranges to showcase their products. However, there are only a few time slots open each year for commercial use of the MCRC ranges.
Not-For-Profits/Fraternal Clubs
In the past groups like the Boy Scouts have camped out on MCRC property as well as Shriners International for group activities.
Cost Structure
The daily shooting range rental fee is $225 per each shooting range for one group. If two or more groups want to rent a range the cost is $300 per day per range.

From Bob Hodgdon
I don't remember just when my dad BE bought the land; it was fairly cheap because it flooded by several feet in the 1951 flood and was subject to that until the Corps did their work on the dikes and upstream sometime later. It was a truck farm; pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, watermelons, maybe even tomatoes and potatoes and later I think corn and other grain.
My brother JB and I went there to shoot .22s at bottles and cans thrown into the river; set up a backstop and shot high power rifles at targets later. Threw lots of clay targets by hand; all this from the time I was 14 or 15 until much later. BE saw his loss of property as the river washed the banks away, so we began to throw old cans, mattresses, springs, metal items of all cans, and later car bodies over the side of the "bluff". It worked or just the Lord decided to change the way it was washing and we gained back some lost ground.
I took my 37mm cannon out there; shot .303 British through the sub-caliber device to mark where in the river the shot would go, and then fired a few 37MM rounds, much to the satisfaction of my buddies and myself.
We did the 4th of July a few times there, when we could set off stuff larger than we could do at home.
He decided to give the ground to a group of guys who formed the Mill Creek Club; first a 30 acre plot or something like that, and then the whole plot shortly before he died. It was to be a private club but to always promote the shooting sports; part of his legacy to the sport that rewarded him so well. If it were to no longer be used as a range, it reverts back to the family!

Pictorial History of Millcreek Rifle Club
1941 - Zoomed out - Millcreek Rifle Club land. The land was owned by a farmer

1941 - Zoomed in - Millcreek Rifle Club land. Please see the farm house and the barn in the lower left hand corned. The current location is approximately where the 500 yard berm is located

1954 - Zoomed out - The land south of the river has drastically changed and shrunk thanks to The Great Flood of 1951.

1954 - Zoomed in - The farm house, farm buildings and all the trees are gone. The property looks very similar to the current shape of MCRC land. One result of the 1951 flood is the Corp of Engineer's built berm that surrounds MCRC.

1991 - MCRC has firmly established itself on the land leased from the Hodgdon family. Most of the bigger ranges are already built including the 25 and 50 yard pistol ranges, 200 yard benchrest range, 318 yard highpower range and the LE range.

1996 - The 300 yard benchrest range and the berm associated with it have been completed but vegetation has not had a chance the establish itself on the disturbed land. The 7 yard range is now also visible in this picture.

2000 - Millcreek Rifle Club ranges are all complete.

General Millcreek Rifle Club Information
History
Millcreek Rifle Club has been around for a long time. Initially, the club was located on the grounds of Powder Creek Shooting Park. As the suburban Johnson County residential population exploded in the 1950s, the club came up against pressures of shooting rifles and pistols in close proximity to neighborhoods.
One day, during a cease fire period of a rifle match, some young boys suddenly appeared and ran across the range. The members had no other choice than to shut down the club right then. The writing was on the wall. It would no longer be safe to shoot rifles and pistols at the Powder Creek location.
For many years, the club was without a home. At that time, Bruce Hodgdon, founder of Hodgdon Powder Company and a pioneer in the shooting sports industry, owned several small farms and parcels of land in the area, including the land where Millcreek stands today. A small group of surviving Millcreek Rifle Club members began shooting at this informal range, using stacked pallets as bench rests. Then, in the early 1970's, Bruce Hodgdon donated the land for the club's current location. Since then the club has been growing in numbers as well as in ranges.
Membership
Currently, the club has over 1,700 members. The club continues to accept new members, even as we approach our membership cap.
Facilities
MCRC has both pistol and rifle ranges plus it also has an area for shotgun practice. The MCRC pistol ranges consist of one 12 yard, 3x 25 yard, one 20 yard and two 100 yard (LE use) ranges. Members can shoot rifles an a 100 to 300 yard benchrest range, a 100 to 500 yard highpower range and a dedicated 100 yard range. Shotgun shooting is allowed in a undeveloped location on the range. The members must provide their own thrower and clay pigeons.
Competitive Shooting
Currently, several shooting disciplines use the MCRC range to hold shooting competitions open to member and the public! These shooting sports include: Benchrest, High Power Rifle Competitions, IPSC, Bowling Pin Shooting and Swiss Rifle and Pistol Bullseye shooting. Please see the calendar for more information regarding the dates and times.
Location
MCRC is located next to the Kansas River in Desoto, Kansas. The club is located on the Kansas River flood way. A flood way helps us keep urban development away from the club but, at the same time expanding the club facilities is very hard as well. Club ranges cannot impede the river's flood water. An engineering firm has to certify any new construction and many levels of local, state and federal government have to approve range construction.
